For a highly regarded Regional Law Firm headquartered in the Southwest, Conbrio was asked to assess the firm’s culture and to recommend changes. Firm leaders were afraid actions by some partners coupled with inability to agree on an important decision on the firm’s future had seriously damaged the firm’s culture. They were uncertain they knew how to repair the damage. The assessment, including a day-long workshop, spotlighted three issues: There was little clarity around who would succeed the firm’s founders when they retired. There was no strategic plan. And the norms in the firm’s different offices were moving apart. The quantitative portion of the assessment confirmed the findings in interviews and the workshop. In addition, it highlighted additional issues including bettering communication, coaching and training and celebrating successes. With the project completed, firm leaders tackled succession by adding additional younger members to the firm’s management committee. They added more leaders for support staff. And when a group of younger partners took the lead on strategic planning, firm leaders encouraged the effort. Taken together, the actions removed anxiety caused by uncertainty.
